The original area of responsibility covered 745 square kilometers and was extended in May 1977 to include areas within the catchments of Cardinia, Toomuc and Deep Creek (an additional 255 square kilometers).
On 1 November 1990 the Authority's area was further extended to include 2400 square kilometers of reiver catachments draining into Westernport Bay. It was renamed the Dandenong Valley and Westernport Authority, covering an area of 3400 square kilometers and serving a community of 1.5 million people.
