Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade, Christmas 1955

DESCRIPTION

TitleMelbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade, Christmas 1955AcknowledgementDonated by Bruce PetrieDescriptionThe Uncle Bob Club was founded in 1941 to raise funds for the Children's Orthopaedic Hospital, located at the Mount Eliza campus of the Royal Children's Hospital, and to organise events for its patients. The Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade and radio station 3AW took part in the annual Christmas festivities from December 1942 until 1970. The hospital closed in 1971 and patients were transferred to the Royal Children's Hospital in Parkville.
Fire Brigade members arrived by fire truck accompanied by Santa Claus, clowns and a marching band, bringing gifts and Christmas cheer to the children. Geoff Manion and Jenny Howard were regular performers at the Christmas parties.
In an interview with Bev Wilkinson, Bruce recalled these visits as his favourite time in the Fire Brigade. Bruce is pictured 2nd from the right.
